10 Tools to Master Your Wellness as a Woman
What’s for dinner? What laundry needs to be done? Did I send that email to my team member?
It’s safe to say as women, we’ve asked ourselves these questions weekly, if not daily.
We play a pivotal role in managing a household, contributing in our professional lives, and showing up with a full heart with our people.
The first life pillar that tends to be impacted the most is our health & well-being.
In this article, we are here to make taking care of ourselves easy breezy using the 10 PYW silly simple tools.
Tool #1 - Start Small
What’s easier, walking for 5 minutes or running a 5K? Depending where you are in your wellness journey, the more effortful a behaviour is, the more motivation we need to execute on it. Choose to implement a habit that requires little effort, therefore little motivation and watch your momentum towards more intricate behaviours make you proud.
Tool #2 - Listen to Your Body (and be okay with saying “no thank you”)
When someone wants to make plans with us or our boss asks us to work on a task we know isn’t suited for us, our body responds with its truest desires. Our gut will pull us forward and communicate a “hek yes”, or, it will pull us away and give us a gentle “no thank you”. This internal body wisdom is strong in women, and is here to show us we can’t be everything to everyone, and to protect us from burnout.
Tool #3 - Stack Habits
What is something you do daily that you don’t even think about? Maybe brushing your teeth, making coffee, doing your nighttime skincare routine. This tool is about performing a desired habit before, during or after a well-established habit. This can look like taking supplements after your tooth brushing or doing pushups on the counter as your coffee brews.
Tool #4 - Prime Success & Leverage Your Environment
If you want to go for a walk after dinner, keep your shoes by the door. If you want to drink more water, find a water bottle or glass that encourages you too. If you want to eat more fruit, keep them at eye level in the fridge or in a bowl at the counter.
Tool #5 - Reduce or Eliminate Distractions
Set screen time caps on your TV or phone that turn off after a certain time. Sometimes we just need to be pulled out of the Instagram and Netflix vortex that we don’t even know is happening. Set timers to complete a task, keep screens out of the room, and create boundaries of engagement (with tasks and people) throughout the day.
Tool #6 - Be Mindful of Your Words
“It’s not a priority for me right now” is much more empowering than “I don’t have time/energy/money for...”. Instead of “I can’t” what can you do? It’s time to truly own our choices and be radically honest with ourselves.
Tool #7 - Expect Roadblocks & Respond with Self-Compassion
Lifestyle improvement takes time as we are reprogramming default patterns. Control what you can, let go of what you can’t. Choose to learn and grow from the experience instead of being hard on yourself.
Tool #8 - Lean on Convenience, Automation & Accountability
Order groceries online, use frozen veggies, or outsource home maintenance. Add self-care to the calendar, lean on childcare/support team, work with a wellness coach, meet with a group or an accountabili-buddy… this is our superpower! Women thrive in building and participating in community.
Tool #9 - Let Go
Of pursuing perfection, people pleasing, the guilt of caring for yourself, what you “should” be able to do, not wanting to bother anyone, of the fear of being vulnerable or a burden or asking too much, needing to look a certain way to be loved or worthy, striving for societies version of success, or how the dishes were loaded. Just be.
Tool #10 - Be Proud of Yourself & Celebrate Your Wins
You are doing amazing. Pause right now as you read this article and bask in three wins from today or this week.
BONUS - Focus on joy and play. We all have an inner child that wants to “adult” less, give that kiddo some love and go be silly.
